HENBURN WINS SPRING TRAINING TOURNAMENT
Updated: 03/23/2009 at 7:31 PM
HenBurn scored 7 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to defeat the Cubs 8-7 and win the Spring Training Tournament. Five teams entered the tournament and played under perfect weather conditions in preparation for the regular season which kicks off March 30. The Cubs and Siler opened the tournament on Friday night with the Cubs coming away with a 19-0 victory. The Cubs stayed in the Winners Bracket and moved on to play a hard hitting HenBurn team.
HenBurn took the early lead and held on for a 16-8 victory sending the Cubs to the Losers Bracket and HenBurn to a Saturday morning game against the winner of the Athletics/Carolina Red game. The air was now cool and crisp for Friday nights final game allowing the ball to jump off the bats. Carolina Red took full advantage of the ideal hitting conditions and pounded out six homeruns from six different players and cruised to a 31-5 victory. The Athletics and Siler met for the first game Saturday morning with Siler coming out on top 16-6 and setting them up for a rematch with the Cubs. The Cubs once again took control early and played almost flawless defense to eliminate Siler 9-3. The two power teams, HenBurn and Carolina Red, were scheduled for the next game and this game lived up to all expectations. The score bounced back and forth with Carolina Red holding a 14-13 lead heading into the top of the 7th. HenBurn scored quickly and grabbed a 16-14 lead setting up a chance for a 7th inning comeback by Carolina Red. Carolina went down in order, the only inning they had not scored in the tournament and HenBurn advanced to the championship game. The next game would match the Carolina Red offense against the Cub defense. Carolina kept the ball in play and the Cub's defense came through once again along with some timely hitting in the late innings to eliminate their second team from the tournament with a 10-4 victory. The championship game would now be a rematch between the Cubs playing their 3rd game of the day and their 5th in less than 24 hours against mighty HenBurn. HenBurn was awarded the home field advantage since they were coming from the Winner's Bracket and needed to win only one game to secure the trophy. The Cubs would need to sweep HenBurn in two games to claim the championship. The Cubs took the early lead and played flawless defense on their way to a 7-1 seventh inning lead. Once again, anything can happen in slow pitch softball. A throwing error opened the door for HenBurn and they stepped right through. A 3 run HR, a couple of bloop singles, and a 2 out walk set the stage for a freakish play that would tie the game. A line drive single allowed 2 runs to score but the runner was caught off first base and forced into a rundown. The runner on third broke for the plate and the Cubs turned the play on him and now he was caught in a run down which would have been the 3rd and final out forcing a second game. A bad throw went down the third base line allowing the run to score and putting the winning run on second. The next batter followed with a fly ball to left but the left fielder fell down and the ball dropped, the winning run scored and HenBurn had captured the championship. It was a great way to start the season. Thank you to all the teams that participated. |
