It took three games but when the Athletics left the New Town Field they left as South Division Tournament Champions. The A's and Yankees locked up in a 9 inning marathon to start the night as both teams showcased their defensive skills. The A's had tied the game with one out in the bottom of the 7th to force extra innings and pushed across a run in the bottom of the ninth for a tight 3-2 victory. They now played the Braves, the only undefeated team left in the tournament. The Athletics were in control from the opening inning and went on to post a 11-4 win and set up the final game, the "Championship Game". Chauncey Tschiffeley had given the A's what appeared to be an insurmountable lead with the only HR of the night, a three run blast into the left field trees in the bottom of the 6th inning. Leading by 9 runs with two out and no runners on base, the A's could smell the victory. But this is slow pitch softball where anything can happen. The Braves staged a two out rally that just fell shot leaving the tying run at the plate and the Athletics left the field with a well earned victory. My pick for most valuable player of the night would go to Josh Whitener, the pitcher for the A's. Josh pitched 23 innings and walked only 2 batters. Walks lead to runs and Josh made the opposing batters hit their way on base. Congratulations to the A's for winning the South Division and also to the Braves and Yankees who both had excellent seasons and played well but fell a little short, this time.
