It took 3 tight, pressure packed games for the Angels to emerge as the Summer Cactus League Champions by coming through the losers bracket and winning the World Series Tournament. The morning started with a 11-10 victory over the Yankees by erasing a 9-1 deficit with a 6 run 6th inning and taking their only lead of the game with a 4 run 7th. The Yankees would pull within a run in the bottom of the 7th with one out and the tying run on second before a fly out and a pop up ended the game.
The Angels moved on to play the Cubs and trailed 5-2 entering the 5th when they pushed across 4 runs to take a 6-5 lead. They would add single runs in the next two innings and hold off the Cubs for an 8-5 victory forcing a second game. The Championship game was tied 1-1 until the fourth when the Angels took their largest lead of the day by scoring 4 runs but saw the Cubs immediately come back with 2 of their own runs. The Angels made it a 6-3 game in the top of the 6th but the Cubs were not finished and quickly tied the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the inning. The status as the Summer League Cactus Champion hung in the balance as the two teams went into the 7th tied and tired. A one out sacrifice fly by Brian Pearce and a 2 out single by Gregg Pearce gave the Angels a 2 run lead with the Cubs coming to bat. Kyle Nunn and Dave Tyson lead off the inning with sharp singles to center putting the tying runs on base and the winning run at the plate. The Cubs last inning rally would stop right there as the next three batters flew out and the Angels left the field as the Summer Champions. Congratulations to the Angels who played three solid exciting games with a good defense and timely hitting. Congratulations to the Cubs and Yankees who did not leave the field as losers. My thanks to the three teams who once again showed what slow pitch softball is all about. |
